At first glance, the Panasonic Toughbook T5 looks very similar to any other laptop created by a major computer company like HP, Apple, Dell, or Gateway. When the Toughbook T5 is picked up, people realize the outer casing is not made of some type of plastic, but actual metal (magnesium alloy). The metal case makes the computer much more rigid for additional protection of the screen, the keyboard and trackpad (when closed), and all of the internal components.

LAPTOP, a company providing unbiased information, advice, and insight into laptop computers, gave the Panasonic Toughbook W5 the 2007 Ultimate Choice Award in the Ultimate Ultraportables category. The 12.1-inch screen size and 2.9-pound weight makes the W5 small enough to fit into a briefcase or satchel to keep the computer with the user all of the time. A shock-mounted hard drive means the hard drive is kept safe even when the briefcase or satchel carrying the computer is accidentally dropped on the floor.
